William "Tubby" Johnson 1918 - 2003

With great sadness the death is announced of Bro. William Hempstead Johnson, better know to all as "Tubby".

The funeral of Bro Tubby took place at Mortonhall Crematorium on Friday, 12th December 2003 at 10:00.

Tubby was initiated in to freemasonry in Lodge Caledonian on the 28th of April 1938, Passed to the degree of Fellow-Craft on the 12th of October 1938 and Raised as a Master Mason on the 23rd of November of that same year. He was Advanced as a Mark Master on the 25th of October 1939.

All who met him instantly liked him, and he was never without a smile and a word of encouragement to new and nervous members.

Evidence of his days as a Whaler was in the form of an ear-ring, when ear-rings were not the fashion they are now!

Those who knew him will miss him sadly, and those who did not have lost out on an opportunity of meeting one of life's gentleman, very few of whom will pass this way again

Tubby held no active office in the Lodge, (content to serve as Assistant Steward) but was still influential in its running if only by the words of encouragement he gave.

Many a Lodge Officer was congratulated on his fine delivery of the ritual even when the aforesaid Officer knew fine well that his performance had been abysmal, but resolved, by this same encouragement to do better the next time.

A lovely man, and the Lodge is weakened by his passing.
